Bang!

That's the sound of week two getting off to a great start here at Weekday High.

We spent an hour chatting with KEXP's DJ Shani. She talked about music radio and we explored the overlapping areas of the radio Venn Diagram (Music vs. Talk radio). Turns out the interviewing techniques are the same for a band as they are for a politician (including substance abuse, scandals, and gaffes). And music, like news, is about storytelling. Thanks to DJ Shani for coming in, we look forward to working with her again later in the summer!

I tried my darndest to shake academic writing out of the interns - keep it simple and sharp! Write for the ear, not the eye! Show me, don't tell me!

I leaned heavily on the exercises I learned from the "Host Whisperer," David Candow. We went through this weekend's writing project with the help of Candow's Yellow Flags for Radio Writing. We also started learning how to mouth edit a piece: read two sentences, then look up from the page and say them out loud. Can't do it? The sentences are too long or complicated. Change or move words? That's the order you should stick with. It's basically a way to bypass your eyes and let your mouth and ears do their own editing.

Also, I rambled pointlessly, Bryce ate some pizza, Artur doodled, Beno got sunburned, and the girls just rolled their eyes at us...
